Aluminium is strong, stable and well suited to slim architectural frames, but it also conducts heat. A thermal break interrupts the direct aluminium path between the exterior and interior sides of a frame, helping the complete window manage heat transfer more effectively.
The basic idea
In a thermally broken profile, the inner and outer aluminium sections are separated by a low-conductivity material. Instead of one continuous metal bridge from outside to inside, heat must pass through this insulating barrier.
The thermal break is built into the frame profile; it is not a coating applied after fabrication and it is different from double glazing, which addresses heat transfer through the glazed area.
Why the whole assembly matters
A thermally broken frame does not determine performance by itself. Glass type, spacer, frame geometry, seals, panel size and installation all influence the finished opening. The best result comes from treating these parts as one coordinated system.
Project-specific performance should therefore be based on the proposed configuration and available test information, not on the phrase ‘thermal break’ alone.
Where it may be especially valuable
Thermally broken systems are commonly considered for climates with significant indoor-to-outdoor temperature differences, highly glazed homes, exposed façades and projects targeting better comfort or energy performance.

Ask whether the exact window or door configuration is thermally broken, what glass options are compatible, and which test reports are available for the proposed system. Dimensions and operating style should be confirmed before relying on a published value.
